Lesson 1  from Speech to Spelling

First developed for high school students with severe reading/spelling problems,  this has been found to be extremely useful at the AVKO Reading Clinic to help a German dyslexic learn to understand English as it is spoken.

Spoken Dialect written in "BAY sick FON nicks" to help the teacher read in normal sloppy English the way most of us speak. This column has the translation of what is dictated by the teacher into the correct spellings the students should use.
Thairz noh sutch thing az uh dum pursun. There is no such thing as a dumb person.
After EACH sentence is dictated and all the students have translated it, then the teacher should give the correct spellings (and explanations) preferably on a dry erase board.  Each student must then correct his/her own mistakes.  IMMEDIATE STUDENT SELF-CORRECTION IS WHAT HELPS THEM LEARN!!!
Hwud juh say? What did you say?
Ah sed, "thairz noh buddy hooze dum." I said, "There is nobody who is dumb.
Doh'n-t wurry if yuh may'k sum miss takes. Don't worry if you make some mistakes.
How'd juh lurn how duh waw'k? How did you learn to walk?
Dij juh lurn how duh waw'k with ow't fawl in dow'n? Did you learn how to walk without falling down?
Dij juh lurn how duh taw'k with ow't may kin miss takes? Did you learn how to talk without making mistakes?
In thiss class yor gaw nuh lurn how duh spell uh lotta wurdz. In this class you are going to learn how to spell a lot of words.
In thiss class eve in yor teechur iz gaw nuh lurn sum thin. In this class even your teacher is going to learn something.
Note:  You may accept "There's" for "there is" and "you're" for "you are."
Please note that just because there are ten sentences in the first lesson, it doesn't mean that the entire lesson must be given in one class period.  When I first developed these "Spoken Dialect Translation Exercises" I only gave two sentences at the beginning of each class hour.  In other words, it took a week to do the entire lesson.
